The Power of the Story You Tell

- By Dr. Larry Davies

In the fast-paced world of leadership across the GCC, we are always hunting for the next big strategy to stay strong. We want our teams to thrive and our projects to succeed. But in our search for "expert" solutions from the outside, are we missing the wisdom right in front of us?

Many talented leaders in our community work in isolation. This raises a big question: Are we actually learning from each other, or are we keeping our best lessons to ourselves?

Sometimes, we feel we have to appear "perfect" to be respected. However, the best ideas usually don't come from a handbook. They grow when leaders are brave enough to share their real-life challenges. Sharing a struggle isn't a sign of weakness; it’s a tool that helps others grow. Think about how you handle stress, how you support the mental health of your team, or the lessons you’ve learned during Ramadan. These reflections are what truly build a strong workplace.

I believe that when we share what we know, we all get stronger. You don't need a formal stage to make an impact. You just need to be willing to share your journey.

The next time you are in a meeting or grabbing coffee with a colleague, try sharing a lesson you learned the hard way. When you tell that story, you aren't just talking - you are giving someone else the permission to be human, too. This is how we shape a better, more connected culture for all of us.

A Moment for Reflection: Think back to a time when you faced a difficult challenge at work. If you shared that experience with a peer today, what is the one lesson they could take away to make their own journey easier?

Your experience is a lesson that someone else might need to hear. Own your story, and don't be afraid to tell it.
