When the World Feels Uncertain, Come Back to Your Body

By Roula Saleh

There are moments when the outside world feels heavy when uncertainty, news, and constant change create a quiet sense of unease within us.

You may notice it in subtle ways:

Restlessness. Overthinking. Tightness in your chest. Difficulty focusing.

This isn’t weakness,  it’s your nervous system responding to stress.

Why This Is Happing

Our brains are wired for safety. When something feels unpredictable or out of our control  like conflict, instability, or constant exposure to distressing information, the brain interprets it as a potential threat.

This activates the body’s stress response, releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Even if the threat is not directly happening to us, our nervous system doesn’t always distinguish between immediate danger and perceived danger.

On top of that, repeated exposure to news and conversations about uncertainty keeps the body in a heightened state of alert. Over time, this can lead to emotional exhaustion, anxiety, and a constant sense of unease.

Understanding this helps us shift from “What’s wrong with me?” to “My body is trying to protect me.”

Your Body Is Trying to Protect You

When we feel unsafe or uncertain, the body shifts into a state of alert.

This is natural. But staying in that state for too long can lead to emotional exhaustion.

The goal isn’t to ignore what’s happening, it’s to support your body so it doesn’t carry the weight alone.

Simple Ways to Regulate Your Nervous System

You don’t need anything complicated. Start small:

  • Slow your breath: Inhale for 4, exhale for 6, repeat for a few minutes
  • Ground your senses: Notice 5 things you can see, 4 you can feel, 3 you can hear
  • Move gently: A walk, stretching, or light movement helps release built-up tension
  • Limit overstimulation: Take breaks from constant news or social media
  • Create small moments of safety: A warm drink, quiet space, or calming music

Return to What You Can Control

Uncertainty often makes us feel powerless.

But there is always something within your control:

Your breath.

Your body.

Your response.

Coming back to these anchors helps restore a sense of stability even when the outside world feels unpredictable.

A Gentle Reminder

You don’t need to have everything figured out right now.

You don’t need to rush back into productivity.

Sometimes, the most important thing you can do…

is slow down, breathe, and come back to yourself.

“When the world feels uncertain, your body can become your safest place to return to.”
