January 2026 - Mental Wellness Begins With Space, Not Pressure

by Roula Saleh

Mental wellness is often spoken about as something we need to fix, improve, or optimize.

But in my work, I’ve learned that true mental wellbeing rarely begins with force. It begins with space.

Space to pause.
Space to notice.
Space to understand what is actually happening beneath the surface.

In a world that constantly pushes us toward productivity and quick solutions, many people feel overwhelmed not because they lack motivation, but because they lack permission to slow down, to reflect, and to be human.

Mental wellness is not about having everything figured out. It’s about developing awareness of your thoughts, emotions, and patterns without judgment. When we allow ourselves to sit with uncertainty rather than rush past it, clarity often emerges naturally.

Small, consistent practices can make a meaningful difference:

  • Taking moments of intentional pause during the day
  • Naming emotions instead of suppressing them
  • Creating routines that support rest as much as action
  • Seeking support when things feel heavy rather than carrying it alone

Mental wellbeing is deeply personal. What supports one person may not work for another, and that’s okay. Growth doesn’t follow a straight line, and healing is not a race.

This Mental Wellness Month, consider asking yourself:
What would it feel like to give myself space instead of pressure?

Sometimes, that question alone is the beginning of change.
