Feed Your Calm: Navigating Cortisol Through Food
- By Roula Saleh
In today's fast-moving world, stress has insidiously crept into everyday life. Whether it is balancing work, sleep deprivation, or emotional stress, our body reacts by releasing cortisol, the key stress hormone. Though cortisol helps keep us awake and alert when required, long-term increased levels can affect both mind and body, causing fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, and even cravings.
The good news? We can influence cortisol levels naturally, starting with what's on the plate. Nutrition is not caloric or macromolecular; it's communication. Every bite sends a message to the brain and body. By eating food that stabilizes blood sugar, nourishes adrenals, and fuels the nervous system, we can calm the body's stress response and get into balance.
1. Balance Blood Sugar to Balance Stress
Unstable blood sugar is one of the biggest cortisol-spiking triggers. Missed meals or white carbs cause crashing blood sugar, which instructs the body to decrease cortisol as fuel.
Do this: Build meals that consist of complex carbohydrates, lean protein, and healthy fat - oatmeal with almond butter and berries, or quinoa with grilled chicken and avocado.
2. Fuel the Adrenals
Your adrenal glands secrete cortisol, so keeping them in check is significant. Nutrients like vitamin C, B vitamins, and magnesium are essential for healthy adrenal functioning.
Include: Leafy greens, citrus fruits, whole grains, seeds, and nuts.
3. Anti-Inflammatory Foods = Anti-Stress Support
Chronic stress is pro-inflammatory, which then maintains cortisol in a raised state. Anti-inflammatory foods rich in antioxidants like berries, turmeric, olive oil, and fatty fish assist in counteracting inflammation and foster clear mental thinking.
Think about Mediterranean-style foods - bright, fresh, and high in omega-3s.
4. Don't Forget Mindful Eating
It's not only what we eat, but how we eat too. Eating hastily can trigger stress hormones, even if your food is healthy.
Eat slowly and mindfully - breathe deeply, chew thoroughly, and savour the moment.
By choosing little, regular things, you can make your body feel grounded, held, and secure. Remember: nourishment isn't only bodily - it's also psychological and emotional. When you nourish your calm, you nourish your entire being.
